Murray
King is a director and principal of Murray King & Francis
Small Consultancy Limited, the business performance improvement
consultancy based in Wellington, New Zealand and operating
internationally.
Murray has extensive experience as a senior executive, director
and consultant in improving business performance through strategic
planning, advocacy and change management.
He is especially experienced in the areas of company start-ups,
strategic planning, advocacy / negotiation, divestments, mergers,
acquisitions, privatisation and IPOs, safety regimes, political
liaison and representation, principally within the transport
industry.
Murray completed his Doctorate in Geography at Victoria University,
Wellington, then studied transport as a Research Fellow at
the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
For over a decade, Murray was a key member of the executive
team that turned around the performance of New Zealand's rail
operator achieving major productivity improvements (700% on
key measure), an operating profit 1999 - 2000 of NZ$71m (net
profit NZ$47m), while transport prices were halved in real
terms.
Murray also helped lead Tranz Rail's transformation from
government-owned corporation to listed company, as Executive
Manager, Corporate Services during the privatisation and Initial
Public Offering of Tranz Rail on sharemarkets in the USA and
New Zealand (1996).
Since leaving Tranz Rail, Murray continues to assist the
company with a wide range of issues. These include transport
policy, road pricing, heavy trucks, branch line evaluation,
property, heritage operations, sale of assets, outsourcing,
competition regulation, ferry wash issues, safety and representational
work. He has also assisted other parties with rail terminal
evaluations, contract negotiations, and budget reviews.
Among other directorships and appointments, Murray was a
director of telecommunications company Clear Communications
for four years, a member of Wellington Regional Council's
Urban Transport Committee for five years, and is a member
of the Australasian Railway Association's Executive Committee,
and Chairman of its New Zealand Group.
An accomplished writer and presenter, Murray has written
numerous papers and articles for professional journals including
World Bank publications and delivered many keynote and other
addresses for transport and engineering conferences. Amongst
other awards he won the BP award for the best paper presented
to the Chartered Institute of Transport on transport issues
in 1979.
Professional associations include: Fellow of the Chartered
Institute of Transport, Fellow of the NZ Institute of Management,
Member of the NZ Association of Economists, Member of NZ Geographical
Society, Companion of the Institution of Professional Engineers
of NZ.
Murray is married with three adult sons, and lives in Wellington,
New Zealand.
